BIDDING
How To Bid? Back

To place bids on items, you can do so by by following these steps:-

(1)Login to your FriendCircles account. If you have not registered with FriendCircles, please register now.
(2)Visit the FriendCircle auction page.
(3)Towards the bottom of the auction description page you will see a "bidding box", you can use the shortcut link to the bidding box if you wish.
(4)Enter in your bid, note you must bid above the minimum bid required.
(5)Click on the "place bid" button.
(6)You will then be asked to confirm you bid, once you have done so your bid will be entered, if successful you will receive a confirmation message. If your bid fails to outbid the current high bidder you will be offered the option to place a higher bid.

Proxy bidding (read Proxy bidding for more information) can aid your chances of winning an auction and help avoid you being outbid at the last moment. To place a proxy bid enter in the maximum price you are willing to pay for the item.

If another user places a bid on the same auction automatic bids will be placed on your behalf in accordance with your maximum bid amount. With proxy bidding you will pay the lowest possible price until someone else places a higher bid.

There is another way of bidding: Buy It Now auctions (read Buy It Now Purchases for more information). Buy It Now prices are set by the seller, if you agree with that price, you can click on the "Buy It Now" button which is displayed on the auction details page.

After clicking on the button you will be re-directed to a confirmation page. On a standard auction that auction will end instantly as the item has been sold via Buy It Now.

On a Dutch auction (read How Dutch Auction Works), you can enter the amount of items you wish to buy (depending the quantity available).

Proxy Bidding Back

With Proxy Bidding you do not have to constantly check on the bids you have placed. Proxy bidding will do it for you.

Proxy Bidding works as follows:

-place a bid, enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the item.
-your maximum bid will be kept a secret.
-Whenever someone else places a bid, our auction software will automatically enter the lowest possible bid for you, up to your maximum bid, until you are the winning bidder.

At the end of an auction, if you are the high bidder, you are the winner. As the winner of the auction, you only pay the lowest possible winning bid, not necessarily your maximum bid.

When Proxy Bidding is in effect, it can appear as if one bidder has beat another bidder with the same bid amount. This is normal and occurs when a bidder has a proxy bid in effect and a second bidder comes along and makes their bid at the exact same amount the current proxy bid is at. Since the proxy bid was placed earlier, that is the bid that will succeed. For the second bidder to succeed in placing a bid, they must bid higher than the proxy bid that is in effect.

A simple example of how proxy bidding works is illustrated below:

Let's say you find something on FriendCircles Auction that you want and you're willing to pay a maximum bid of $25.00 for it, but the current bid price is only $2.25. You could take the long route and sit at your computer, outbidding each new bid until you reach $25.00. With Proxy Bidding it is done automatically for you.

Buy It Now Purchase Back

Buy It Now Purchase allows you to buy an item at a known set price. Buy It Now Purchase have two types of listing, namely :

-Items that have a bid price and a Buy It Now price -- you have the option to place a bid and compete in the online auction or use Buy It Now to purchase the item immediately.
-Items that have a Buy It Now price only (no bidding is required) -- you can purchase the item right away.

Using Buy It Now is simple:

1.Decide whether you're willing to buy the item for the Buy It Now price. Take note, shipping and handling charges are not included in the Buy It Now price. Shipping cost and other charges will be displayed in the listing description.
2.Click the Buy It Now button.
3.You'll go to a confirmation page where listed its payment detail. Click "Proceed" button to complete the purchase after you have confirmed to buy it.
4.Pay for the item, and the seller ships it to you.

When it's part of an auction-style listing, the Buy It Now option is only shown on listings until an item receives its first bid, or, for a Reserve Price Auction, when the reserve is met. This means that when you see an item has both a Buy It Now price and a first bid price listed, you will need to act quickly!

Dutch Auction Back

When you see an auction-type listing offering two or more identical items, this is called a Dutch Auction. This means the seller is offering multiple, identical items for sale. Unlike a regular FriendCircles auction, Dutch Auctions can have many winners.

In Dutch Auction the bidder will enter a maximum bid he is willing to pay for an item, and the number of items he wants to purchase. The highest bidder(s) will receive the number of items they have bid on, and the remaining bidders will receive the number of items still available. Buyers are able to bid more than once for the same item.

When you bid on a Dutch Auction, you specify the number of items you're interested in and the price you're willing to pay per item.

Important: at the end of the auction date winning bidders will pay a price equal to the lowest winning bid. Winning bids are selected in order of bid price per item. For example, a bid for 5 units at $12 per unit is ranked above a bid for 10 units at $11 per unit. If two bids have the same price per item, the earlier bid is given priority.

You cannot lower your "total bid value" (your bid price per item times the number of items on which you’re bidding) if you raise your bid in this type of Dutch auction.

Winning bidders have the right to refuse partial quantities.
This means that if you win some, but not all, of the quantity you bid for, you don't have to buy any of them. Example, Bidder A bid on 8 items, but won only 7 of them. Bidder A can refuse to complete the purchase, because Bidder A did not win the quantity they bid on.

Bid Increments Back

Any new bid you place must be greater than the current high bid. For example, if you're bidding on an item with a current price of $10, then you must bid at least $11 or more.

The increments table is as following:
Current PriceBid Increment
$0.01-$0.99 $0.05
$1.00-$9.99 $0.25
$10.00-$24.99 $0.50
$25.00-$99.99 $1.00
$100.00-$249.99 $2.50
$250.00-$499.99 $5.00
$500.00-$999.99 $10.00
$1,000.00-$2,499.99 $25.00
$2,500.00-$4,999.99 $50.00
$5,000.00-$49,999.99 $100.00
$50,000.00-$99,999.99 $200.00
$100,000.00 and up $500.00

Item Watching Back

This feature lets you keep a close eye on any auction without having to place a bid on it. Item Watching allows you to keep up to date on how an auction is doing and prepares you to place a winning last minute bid.

You can watch any auction by clicking on the "Watch this item" link on any of the auction page.

Auction Watching Back

The auction watch features notifies you of newly listed auctions which contain "keywords" you have chosen. For example if you are looking for a "Playstation 2" you could enter in those keywords from within your member's area.

Each time a new auction is listed containing the term "Playstation 2" you will be notified via this web-site. You can enter in as many keywords as you like.

Outbid Notice Back

An e mail notice will let you know that you have been outbid when another buyers bid exceeds your maximum price.

Example:

You have been outbid on an auction you placed a bid on.

Auction Name: Canan PowerShot A95
Click here to view the auction

You can place another bid using the bid placement form from the bottom of the auction details page.

You can use the link in the e mail notice to return to the item page and increase your bid, if you like.

Getting Outbid Back

How can you be Outbid in an Auction?

-When another buyer has placed a higher maximum bid than yours.
-You get outbid immediately when you enter your bid. This happens because another buyer had a higher maximum bid than yours. Your bid prompted FriendCircles Auction proxy bidding system to raise the other buyer's bid above yours.
-Snipping, meaning to place a high bid in the closing seconds of an auction.

Bid Retraction Back

Buyer are allowed to retract bid for following reasons:

-The description of an item the buyer have bid on changed significantly after he placed his bid.
-The buyer cannot contact the seller. This means he tried to contact the seller by using our messaging system, and it comes back undeliverable.

A bid is a binding contract. Except under special circumstances, bid retraction is not permitted.

FriendCircle will thoroughly investigate bid retractions. Violations of this policy may resulting:

-One point deduction from your feedback score.
-Temporary suspension from bidding on FriendCircles.

-2 invalid retractions within 7 days - suspend 2 weeks from date of retraction.
-3 invalid retractions within 14 days - suspend 1 month from date of retraction.

You can contact any FriendCircles Auction seller by clicking on the "Ask Seller a Question" link on the item page. This feature allows you to send an email to a seller, even if you have not yet bid on or purchased the item.

Buyer Policies Back

At FriendCircles, buyers have to remember some important rules that help keep FriendCircles a fun and safe place trade. Here is a list of some of the most important policies our buyers must follow:

Non-payment
Buyers are not permitted to win items at auction or buy an item in a Buy It Now listing without paying, thus blocking legitimate buyers and disappointing sellers.

False Contact Information
FriendCircles has a strict policy regarding false contact information. Buyers are required to maintain accurate and up-to-date contact information to facilitate communication.

Transaction Interference
Buyers are not permitted to email other buyers in an open or ended transaction to warn them away from a seller or item. This is known as transaction interference.

Invalid Bid Retraction
Any misuse or frequent use of the bid retraction option is not permitted on FriendCircles. This includes any manipulation of the bidding process to discover the maximum bid of the current high bidder.

Unwelcome Bidding
Buyers are not permitted to buy in violation of the terms set forth by the seller in the listing description. This is known as unwelcome buying. Examples:

-Seller states they ship to "home country" only and the buyer is outside the stated shipping area
-Seller will not enter into a transaction with members who have a negative feedback rating
-Bidder rebids after the seller has canceled their bid
-Using a secondary account to make a transaction after an associate account has been blocked by a seller

Solicitation of Off-site Sale
It is a violation of this policy for a buyer to contact a seller and offer to purchase the listed item outside of FriendCircles Auction.

Listing Policies Back

There are certain rules to take note before listing your item.

To help keep FriendCircles Auction a safe and enjoyable marketplace for buyers and sellers, please read and follow our policies about listing practices. Please keep in mind that the following policies apply to both the auction-style and fixed price formats.

Listings violating FriendCircles Auction policies may result in action which may include a formal warning, the ending of all violating listings, or even temporary or indefinite suspension of a user's account. FriendCircles will consider the circumstances of an alleged offense and the user's trading records before taking action. In most cases, FriendCircles will credit all associated fees when a listing is ended.

Choice listings
A seller may not allow buyers to choose from a selection of items. This practice can lead to misrepresentation or fraud because it requires offline negotiation.

Signposts
Signposts, listings primarily meant to direct a user to a seller's store or other listings, are not allowed.

Want ads and trades
Listings communicating a desire to buy or trade items are not allowed in any category other than non-binding bid categories (Real Estate).

Members interested in posting want ads may do so using FriendCircles Auction Want It Now format. In this format buyers create posts describing what they want, and sellers can respond to buyers with the items they are selling on FriendCircles Auction.

Giveaways, raffles, or prizes
Listings that promote giveaways, random drawings, or prizes are not permitted. Such promotions are highly regulated and may be unlawful in many states. FriendCircles Auction itself may run such promotions and may grant authorization to its partners or third-party companies to run such promotions.

Listing techniques that evade FriendCircles Auction fee structure
Listings may not circumvent FriendCircles Auction fees. Examples include:
-Offering the opportunity to buy the listed item or other item outside of FriendCircles Auction
-Low prices but unreasonably high shipping or handling costs.
-Listing an item that requires or offers additional purchase.
-Multiple Item Listing avoidance: listing a single item and offering additional identical items for sale in the item description. In these situations, the seller typically instructs buyers to indicate the number of items they want, and states that they can get the same price as the item in the listing.
-Listings with an email address or domain name in the title. An exception exists for the sale of actual domain names.
-Selling currently active catalogs through which buyers can then purchase merchandise. However, selling collectible catalogs that are no longer active is allowed.
-Offering items for sale in a manner that circumvents FriendCircles Auction fees.
-Reserve fee Avoidance - Canceling bids and ending items early because the sellers desired price has not been met.

This is considered reserve fee avoidance.

Reserve price violations
Reserve price listing violations, including reserve fee avoidance, occur when a seller lists an item that includes any of the following:

-Stating the reserve price in the title or description of the item when the item has not been listed using the reserve feature.
-Stating in the title or description that the high bidder is obligated to purchase the item even if the reserve price has not been met.
-Chronically ending items with bids in the last 12 hours because the seller's desired price has not been met. Sellers should use the reserve price feature if they are only willing to sell at a certain price.

These types of listings are not permitted and the listings will be ended and/or the seller warned or suspended. The insertion fee will be automatically credited for any listings that are ended by FriendCircles.

Inappropriate titles and inappropriate keyword use
Inappropriate titles are not permitted.

Keyword spamming, using inappropriate brand names or other words referenced for the purpose of attracting buyers to a listing, is not permitted.

Payment surcharges
Sellers may not charge FriendCircles Auction buyers an additional fee for their use of ordinary forms of payment, including acceptance of checks, money orders, electronic transfers or credit cards. Such costs should be built into the price of the item. This policy reduces the potential for confusion among bidders about the true cost of an item. Further, some forms of payment surcharges, such as credit card surcharges, are forbidden under the laws of many states, including California.

There are three exceptions to this rule:

-Sellers may add a reasonable shipping and handling fee to the final price of their item, providing that this fee is disclosed up-front in the listing. A shipping and handling fee can cover the seller's reasonable costs for mailing, packaging and handling the item. Shipping and handling fees cannot be listed as a percentage of the final sale price.
-Sellers may pass along the costs associated with using a third-party escrow service, if the buyer chooses to use an escrow service.
-Sellers may choose to accept payment in a different currency than the currency listed on FriendCircles. If the buyer chooses this optional payment method, the seller may pass along to the buyer any costs associated with the currency exchange, provided that the costs are disclosed and agreed to in advance by the buyer.

Profanity
FriendCircles does not allow the use of profanity or patently vulgar language in public areas. This includes the use of language that is racist, hateful, sexual, or obscene in nature in a public area. This policy extends to text within listings, on About Me pages and on storefronts.

We make allowances for listings that contain profane words as a part of the title of the item for sale, such as a CD or a movie. In this case, sellers should block out the bulk of the offending word with asterisks (for example, s*** or f***). Please keep in mind that all listings must follow policies regarding adult items as outlined in our Mature Audiences guidelines. Within Mature Audiences categories, sellers may quote from the title of the item being sold without altering it. However, we do not allow the use of profanity in describing the item being sold.

HTML and JavaScript
FriendCircles Auction does not permit the use of the following types of HTML or JavaScript functions in your item listing:

-HTML or JavaScript used to drop or read a cookie on any FriendCircles Auction page
-HTML or JavaScript that redirects the user from FriendCircles Auction to another page (such as the "replace" script)
-HTML or JavaScript that automatically call remote scripts and pages (such as JavaScript includes or iframes)
-HTML or JavaScript that changes registry entries, or otherwise write to another's computer hard drive
-HTML or JavaScript that creates automatic "pop-ups" (exception - links that open in a new window when clicked on)
-HTML or JavaScript that automatically posts to scripts in FriendCircles Auction
-HTML or JavaScript that automatically loads any binary program on another's computer (exception - Flash content)
-HTML or JavaScript that automatically overwrites any area on the listing outside of the item description area

Many people are not aware of the problems these HTML or JavaScript functions can cause and do not intentionally use them to cause harm. However, these HTML or JavaScript functions can be used for malicious purposes. Therefore, in the interest of security, we have eliminated the use of these HTML or JavaScript functions on our site. Attempts to use the disabled scripts will return a very specific error message that begins: "Disallowed JavaScript/HTML Syntax" and you will be prevented from listing the item or will be disabled at run-time. Any other JavaScript error indicates a separate issue, and is not related to the disabling of these scripts.

Proper category listing
Sellers must list items in the appropriate category.

Policy: Wrongly categorized items will be moved to an appropriate category. Listings that belong in the Mature Audiences category found elsewhere will be ended.

Multi-listing
Multi-listing occurs when a seller posts more than 10 listings for identical items. The best method to list identical items is through our Storefront, Fixed Price or Multiple Item Auctions formats. Although there are reasons to list identical items at the same time, enabling a single seller to list too many identical items at one time hurts the buying experience.

If a seller lists in more than one category, the categories must be relevant. Any additional identical listings will be ended. The insertion fee will be automatically credited for ended listings. Sellers may not register multiple User ID's to list more than 10 identical items. Due to the nature of general admission tickets, sellers that list general admission tickets in the Tickets category may list up to 20 identical listings.

Links
Summary: FriendCircles Auction listings can only be used to facilitate the sale of the listed item. Listings can't refer to or promote the seller's individual Web site, off-FriendCircles Auction sales or other businesses. On the FriendCircles Auction About Me page, however, the seller may promote their individual Web site or business.

The FriendCircles Auction Item page may not contain URLs or links to, or promotional information about, any off-FriendCircles Auction Web page, including Web sites of the seller or any third party.

There are two exceptions to this general rule. An FriendCircles Auction item page may contain a link to information related specifically to that item that:

-Acknowledges a company providing services related to that listing (such as counters, listing management tools, or payment services). This acknowledgement may contain a logo (88x33 pixels) and up to 10 words of text (HTML font size 3) but only one of those may be clickable.
-Points interested buyers to another Web page that contains nothing other than more information (such as pictures, product specifications or detailed terms and conditions) about FriendCircles Auction items listed by that seller.

Links from the FriendCircles Auction Item View page that interfere in any way with the bidding process or solicit FriendCircles Auction user information are not allowed. Links from the FriendCircles Auction Item View page to pages that promote off-FriendCircles Auction sales in any way are forbidden, though such pages may contain discrete links to other commercial Web pages.

The FriendCircles Auction About Me page may describe the seller's business and may contain URLs or links to the seller's individual Web site. It may not specifically promote off-FriendCircles Auction sales or sales of items prohibited on FriendCircles Auction, nor may it contain links to commercial Web sites where goods from multiple sellers are aggregated by a search engine. This is a summary of our links policy. View the policy in full.

Bonus items
Sellers are allowed to offer a bonus item to bidders as long as the following requirements are met:

-In all bonus listings, the seller must state the exact price at which the bonus will apply.
-In Multiple Item Listings the seller must offer the same bonus item to all winning bidders. Multiple Item Listing rules require that all winning bidders receive identical items.

FeedBack Scores Back

Each member of the FriendCircles community that you trade with has the ability to leave feedback for you. In order to make that contribution fair and safe, each member can only affect another member's feedback score by +1, 0, or -1.

The feedback score represents the number of members that are satisfied doing business with this member. It is the difference between the number of members who left a positive rating and the number of members who left a negative rating. The feedback score is shown in parentheses next to a member's Handle, for example, Friendizenick (25).

Example: if friendizenick bought and sold a total of 3 items.

-his first given feedback is positive feedback -> his score will be added 1 point, 25 + 1 = 26
-his second given feedback is neutral feedback -> his score will be remained the same, 26 + 0 = 26
-his third given feedback is negative feedback -> his score will be minus 1 point, 26 - 1 = 25

An invalid bid retraction will also impact user's feedback score. An invalid bid retraction will deduct 1 point to thier feedback score. For example: friendizenick have retract a bid before and the bid is found invalid because he violated the feature to discover the maximum bid of the current high bidder. His total feedback score will be deducted 1 point (ie. 25 - 1 =24)

FeedBack Stars Back

The feedback system is easy to understand. Feedback Stars are awarded to FriendCircles members for achieving 1 or more feedback points.

You receive:

Example: if friendizenick bought and sold a total of 3 items.

-+1 point to your feedback score for each positive comment and rating left for you.
-0 points to your feedback score for each neutral comment and rating left for you.
--1 point to your feedback score for each negative comment and rating left for you.
-A feedback star once you have 1 or more comments and ratings left for you.

Here's what the different stars mean:

ScoreStars
10 to 49 points Yellow Star
50 to 99 points Green Star
100 to 199 points Blue Star
200 to 499 points Red Star
500 points and aboveGold Star

Tip: In most cases, a high feedback score is a good sign, but you should always check a member's Feedback to read comments and look for negative remarks.

Reviewing Feedback a Member Has Left for Others Back

Reviewing the ratings and comments a member has left for others provides insight into your potential trading partner. To do this:

1.Go to the member's Feedback Page by clicking on their Feedback Score (the number next to their User ID).
2.Click on the "Left for Others" link.

Please consider the following when reviewing feedback:

-How did the member conduct their trading?
-How did they resolve conflicts, if any?
-Did any comments appear to be retaliatory in nature?
-Did negative events, if any, occur recently or a long time ago?

Important: The feedback can only be left once, and it cannot be edited afterwards. FriendCircles reserve its right to delete malicious or untrue feedbacks.

ONLINE SECURITY & PROTECTION
Protecting Your Account Back

Choose a Unique Handle
Your Handle is the nickname that identifies you in FriendCircles Auction. Choosing a Handle that is not related to your email address will help prevent individuals from collecting your email address, which may lead to access to your email account. By using a unique Handle, you will also be able to minimize unwelcome email from other FriendCircle Auction members. If your Handle is the same or similar to your email address, we encourage you to change your handle.

Choose a Handle and password that are different from the Handle's and passwords for all of your other online accounts. Using the same Handle and password for several online accounts means that if someone is able to access one of your accounts, they will have access to all of your other accounts as well.

If you receive e mails requesting your personal information and claiming to be from FriendCircles, but is not (link in e mail directs to pages other than FriendCircles), we call this "spoofed" e mail or websites. If in doubt always check back with FriendCircles.

Change Your Password Regularly
In order to assure that your password is secure, we encourage you to change your password every 30-60 days.

Use Virus Protection Software
There are a number of computer viruses in circulation that log and record keystrokes. For this reason, we recommend that you install virus protection. It is also important that virus protection is kept up-to-date, as new versions of viruses are circulated regularly. Most virus protection software can be set to install new updates on a regular basis.

Install a Firewall
A firewall is either hardware or software that controls the flow of information to and from your computer. Using a firewall will help prevent any unauthorized parties from gaining access to sensitive information stored on your computer. It is especially important to use a firewall if you have a high-speed connection that is always connected to the Internet.

Choosing a Secure Password Back

Before talking about how to choose good passwords, here are a few reminders of good general password practices:

1.Never share your password.
2.Never write down a password.
3.Change your password with some frequency.
4.Never store your password in a program.

Methods for Choosing a Good, Memorable Password:

1.When choosing a password, avoid using dictionary words or names, regardless of the language.
2.Don't use common misspellings of dictionary words (including replacing "l" with "1" and the like).
3.Don't use the name of the computer or your account.
4.Don't use sample passwords, such as the ones on this page.
5.Use a mixture of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation (that is, use multiple character classes).
6.Avoid using characters that don't appear on a standard US 101 key keyboard.

Email and Web Sites Impersonating FriendCircles Back

Be sure you are on an FriendCircles page
Before signing in, please check the Web address in your browser. If you click on a link in an email, verify that the Web address in your browser is the same as the address shown in the email. Never type your FriendCircles Handle and password into a Web page that doesn't have "friendcircles.com" immediately before the first forward slash (/).

Some members have reported attempts to gain access to sensitive information through email requests that appear that they were sent from FriendCircles. These requests often include links to Web pages that will request that you sign in and submit information. At FriendCircles, we identify these as 'spoofed' email or Web sites. If you are concerned about receiving email of this nature, please review FriendCircles's suggestions to minimize unwanted email.

FriendCircles will never ask you to provide credit card numbers, or other sensitive information through email. If we request information from you, we will always direct you back to the FriendCircles site.

Take caution with email that includes attachments or links

TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
Login Problem Back

The single most common reason for an inability to log in is e mail/password problems. Before taking any of the steps mentioned below, check your e mail and password. Make sure your caps lock is off.

If that fails, you will need to ensure your browser's cookies are enabled. Your browser's default settings ensure this. If you have changed the default settings, or return repeatedly to the Logon page after submitting your logon information, you will need to reset your browser so that it is set to accept 'cookies'.

How to enable your browser's cookies:

Internet Explorer:
1.Inside your browser, click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
2.Click on the Security tab.
3.Click the button that is called Custom Level.
4.Scroll down to the section on Cookies.
5.Click to select Enable (if necessary) under the selections for both 'Allow cookies that are stored on your computer' and 'Allow per-session cookies'.
Netscape Navigator:
1.Inside your browser, click on the Edit menu and select Preferences.
2.Click on Advanced in the Preferences category tree.
3.You will then see a box with Cookies options.
4.select "Accept all cookies".
5.click "OK".

Some versions of older browsers do not have support for cookies. To use this site, and many others which require cookies for session management, you may need to upgrade your browser to the latest version.
